Benefits of road running, and how to take the first step
Road running is not only for athletes. With a pair of shoes and a first step, you start taking care of your body and your mind at the same time.

You have seen someone running down the street early in the morning, stride steady, breath in rhythm, and thought “I wish I had that kind of energy”? The good news is that this energy does not arrive finished in anyone. It is built, one step at a time, and it can start today, with you. Road running is not a topic for professional athletes. It is one of the simplest, most accessible ways to take care of your body and your head at the same time.
Running is not only for marathoners
There is an idea that, to run, you need shoes that cost two thousand reais, a GPS watch, and a past as an athlete. None of that is true. To take the first step you need very little: a comfortable pair of shoes, the will to step out of your routine, and the courage to start. That is why running is so democratic. It fits the lives of real people, with tight schedules, knees that have complained before, and full calendars.
What your body gains when you start
The benefits tend to show up faster than most people imagine, and not only on the scale or in the mirror. People who run regularly tend to feel:
- More energy and drive through the day, that feeling that seemed to come only from strong coffee
- A lighter head, because running helps ease built-up stress
- Better sleep, a stronger heart, and a more active metabolism
- Self-esteem on the rise, from the satisfaction of seeing your own progress each week
It is not magic, and it does not happen overnight. It is what comes from showing up, repeating, and respecting your own body. In a few weeks you notice the difference in your wind, your mood, and the way you face the rest of the day.
Every runner has had a day 1
Nobody starts by running five kilometers without stopping. That experienced runner you admire was once a breathless beginner, walking more than running. That is exactly how you start: alternating walking and easy running, without hurry and without comparison.
A realistic starting point can look like this: twenty minutes of activity, alternating one minute of easy running with two minutes of walking, two or three times a week. The secret is to focus on your pace, not the pace of whoever runs past you. Progress comes from celebrating the small wins, not from pushing past what you can handle.
For me, running is more than exercise. It is almost therapy with a view of the sunrise.
Start this week, and start well
You do not need to wait for Monday, or for next month. Pick a time that fits your routine, set aside comfortable clothes, and set a simple goal: walk and run for twenty minutes. It does not need to be fast. It only needs to start.
Even so, starting well makes a difference. Every body has a history, a record of pain, and its own way of landing. An assessment with a physiotherapist helps you understand your limits, look after your technique, and lower the chance of injury before it shows up. That is the work I do at the clinic, as a specialist in Sports Physiotherapy through SONAFE, and in running coaching, so you can run with more safety and more pleasure for much longer.
If you have been thinking about putting your shoes on and heading out, take this as the invitation. And if you feel any pain or uncertainty along the way, it is worth talking it through and booking a session before you speed up. The you of tomorrow will thank you for the step you take today.
